Coach Calhoun and Murraine

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - Troy Calhoun, U.S. Air Force Academy football head coach tours the flight deck of a C-130H with Master Sgt. Security forces redeployment

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -Tech. Sgt. Scott Joiner, 302nd Security Forces Squadron, is greeted by his daughter Xadie and wife Carmen upon his redeployment May 3, 2014. Joiner returned to Colorado Springs with nearly 30 security forces members from the Air Force Reserve Command’s 302nd Airlift Wing, located here, and the 310th Space Wing, located at Schriever Air Force Base, Colo. The Airmen were deployed to the Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyz Republic since Jan. 15. While deployed, the Airmen provided for the location's integrated base defense systems. Courtney Arnold, Commander of the 302nd Airlift Wing shares the story of the 302nd Airlift Wing Airmen who lost their lives in support of the wing’s Modular Airborne Fire Fighting mission with Lt. Gen. Michael Dubie, deputy commander of U.S. Northern Command during the combatant commander’s visit to the 302nd AW April 17, 2014. While en route to Colorado on May 13, 1995, the C-130 assigned to the 302nd AW crashed after having delivered personnel and equipment to support wildland firefighting efforts in Boise, Idaho. The Airmen who perished in the crash are: Lt. Col. Robert Buckhout; Capt. Geoffrey Boyd; 1st Lt. Lance Dougherty; Chief Master Sgt. Jimmie Vail; Master Sgt. Jay Kemp; and Staff Sgt. Sean Stephens, a Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System certified loadmaster assigned to the 52nd Airlift Squadron explains the functionality of the portion of the MAFFS II system controlled by the C-130 loadmasters to Lt Gen Michael Dubie, Deputy Commander of U.S. Northern Command. The combatant command’s general visited the Air Force Reserve’s 302nd Airlift Wing on April 17, 2014 here to receive a MAFFS mission overview. The wing’s aerial fire fighting mission highlights interagency cooperation with the 302nd AW being a federal force belonging to the Department of Defense, yet working in concert with the National Interagency Fire Center and the U.S. Forest Service. NIFC determines fire fighting needs and strategies. Then, when it is determined MAFFS will be utilized, NIFC through U.S. Northern Command requests the DOD, U.S. Air Force resources. Instructor at Patriot Defender

Senior Airman Brian Fell, an instructor at Patriot Defender, leads members of the 302nd Security Forces Squadron in training. Twenty members of the 302nd SFS attended Patriot Defender training at Fort Wolters, Texas, Feb. 1, 2014. This 16-day training concentrates on combat deployment type situations. Patriot Defender is broken into two halves of training. First the Airmen learned and refined such skills as mission planning and development, land navigation, and M-4 and M-9 firing. The second half concentrated detainee and POW procedures, tactical combat casualty care and urban operations among many other topics. The final three days of the second half of training were dedicated to field training. This involved putting the new and refined skills into practice. The units were briefed on a mission and given a different task each day. “Overall, this experience not only taught us a lot but also gave us the chance to apply what we learned,” said Senior Airman Jessica Avila, a fire team member with the 302nd SFS. “Our motivation and positive attitude throughout our training brought out the best in all of us.” (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Jessica Avila)
