302nd Airlift Wing Photos

A perfect fit

Capt. Eric Swartz, 731st Airlift Squadron, presents one of the unit's scarves to Angelo Marmaro. Aviators first started wearing scarves in the early 1900s when the planes were wide-open and cold winds had a tendency to blow down the neck of pilots' coats. They had two basic choices--wear a coat with a high, close-fitting collar, or use a bit of fabric to plug the gap...e.g., a scarf.
