Paying tribute
World War II veterans salute the American flag June 6, 2012, during a ceremony to unveil a statue near Utah Beach, France. The veterans, together with distinguished visitors and more than 200 attending the ceremony, paid tribute to Army Maj. Richard “Dick” Winters, a former World War II commander of “E” Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. The memorial eulogizes Winter’s unwavering commitment to the soldiers he was assigned and the leadership young officers and non commissioned officers showcased during battle in Europe. Winters and his company were made famous by the New York Times bestseller and same-titled television series “Band of Brothers” that documents the Airborne paratroopers’ time fighting in France, Holland and Germany.
