MAFFS to Phoenix
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- A C-130J from the California Air National Guard, Channel Islands Air National Guard Station, Port Hueneme, Calif. prepares to leave here July 3 for the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, Ariz. The aircraft, equipped with the U.S. Forest Service’s Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System moved locations at the USFS's request. Three more MAFFS-equipped Aircraft, another from the California ANG and two from the Air Force Reserve Command’s 302nd Airlift Wing, based at Peterson, are expected to follow. An interagency DoD and USFS program, MAFFS provides aerial firefighting resources when commercial and private air tankers are no longer able to meet the needs of the Forest Service.
