Two new chaplains recently joined the 302d Airlift Wing, adding to the wing’s capability to provide spiritual and emotional support.

Chaplain Capt. J Acheson and Chaplain 1st Lt. Ernest McDonnell joined the wing in January 2025 and are ready to support wing members and their families.

“The mission of a chaplain is to foster spiritual resiliency, minister in a pluralistic environment and support the well-bring of servicemembers and their families, regardless of their faith background,” said Acheson.

Acheson, born in Michigan and raised in Montana, comes from his previous assignment at Kadena Air Base in Japan. He prides himself on his conflict resolution skills and believes everyone is meant to be at peace with each other. He maintains an athletic lifestyle with interests in wrestling, cycling and mountain biking and enjoys making modifications to his car.

McDonnell was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and has a background in law enforcement working as a police officer and corrections officer, along with some experience working within the juvenile system. He said he has a heart for people and wants to meet them where they’re at, cultivating positive relationships throughout the wing through shared and relatable experiences.

“I want members to know me, not just as a chaplain but as a person,” said McDonnell. “Those smaller conversations that make us human, that’s the type of relationship I want to have with the whole wing.”

Chaplains in the Air Force serve as spiritual leaders, counselors and morale boosters. They provide confidential guidance to Airmen of all faiths and beliefs while fostering a sense of belonging.

Acheson emphasized that being present where people are and listening to their unique issues is critical for mission success. McDonnell wants to establish regular morale-building events to bolster resiliency and spiritual readiness.

The Chaplain corps is fully staffed with three chaplains and two chaplains’ assistants ready to serve the 302d AW.

The chaplains make rounds during each unit training assembly meeting with and providing spiritual counseling to members of the 302d AW.
