Base to implement new security system

Peterson began using the Defense Biometric Identification System , or 'DBIDS' system Feb. 2 at all gates on a periodic basis, and will mandate its use for all people entering the base starting March 2.

People, especially the thousands of Pikes Peak-area retirees and family members, who haven't registered yet are encouraged to register as soon as possible or they will experience delays.

Peterson began scanning driver and passengers' identification cards at random Feb. 1 at the base's three gates. Initial registration feedback is positive, and security forces would like to have everyone registered prior to March 2 to reduce gate delays.

Since October 2008, Peterson's security forces continue registering identification carfds into the DBIDS system at the west gate visitor control center and Building 350 at the military personnel section. More than 47,000 people registered in DBIDS to date, but many others who don't commute to Peterson on a regular basis still need to register.

DBIDS is a Department of Defense initiative designed to improve the security of U.S. military bases. Peterson will be the first Air Force base in the continental United States to fully implement the system.

The system contributes to 21st SW efforts to make Peterson a safer place to live and work by blending technology with physical security.

"One of the 21st Space Wing's missions is unsurpassed installation support," said Col. Jay Raymond, 21st SW commander. "DBIDS is a critical next step to this mission. Implementing this technology is more than a security measure; it's the right thing to do for the protection of our people and our national defense missions."
