MAFFS II declared operational
A Modular Airborne Firefighting System, or 'MAFFS II' unit, is test fired March 19, 2008, at Chico Municipal Airport, Calif. The MAFFS II system is an upgrade from its predecessor, able to be deployed to firefighting hot spots more swiftly while no longer requiring external pressurizing units to prepare fire retardant for mission. The MAFFS II system was approved in late January 2009 for operational use. (Courtesy photo/U.S. Forest Service)
