World War II vet gets up-close look at AF Reserve
Maj. Jeff Phillips (right) shows William "Bill" Hix Poole the ins and outs of a 302nd Airlift Wing Air Force Reserve C-130 "Hercules" May 4 during a visit to Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. Mr. Poole, a B-25 bomber pilot assigned to the 310th Bombardment Group during World War II, was escorted throughout the base to get an up-close look at the mission of the 310th Space Wing and its subordinate units. Mr. Poole saw combat in the skies above both North Africa and Italy, and had flown 73 combat missions by the age of 20. The 310th SW, an AF Reserve wing, was reactivated recently, taking on the famed namesake of the 310th BW. Major Phillips is a pilot with the 731st Airlift Squadron.
