‘Sumit 38’ fallen remembered with re-dedication ceremony
Air Force Reserve Col. Jay Pittman, 302nd Airlift Wing commander, showcases the Congressional Record read on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives honoring the re-dedication of the wing’s ‘Sumit 38’ memorial Aug. 4, 2012, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. Pittman, who presided over the ceremony, ushered in the re-dedication of the memorial which honors the six AF Reservists who perished during the crash of a C-130 Hercules on May 13, 1995. The memorial was re-dedicated with family members of the fallen and 302nd Airlift Wing and 52nd Airlift Squadron members present. The memorial was moved from its previous location as part of the wing’s expansion under the Total Force Initiative framework. The Airmen who were killed when their aircraft crashed approximately 60 miles southeast of Mountain Home, Idaho, are: Lt. Col. Robert Buckhout; Capt. Geoffrey Boyd; 1st Lt. Lance Dougherty; Chief Master Sgt. Jimmie Vail; Master Sgt. Jay Kemp; and Staff Sgt. Michael Scheideman. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Stephen J. Collier)
