‘Sumit 38’ fallen remembered with re-dedication ceremony
An emotional Senior Master Sgt. Dave Carey speaks fondly of his fellow Air Force Reservists who perished May 13, 1995, when their C-130 Hercules, call sign ‘Sumit 38,’ crashed approximately 60 miles southeast of Mountain Home, Idaho. Carey, assigned to the 731st Airlift Squadron, narrated a re-dedication ceremony Aug. 4, 2012, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo, honoring the six AF Reservists who perished during the crash. The memorial was re-dedicated with family members of the fallen and 302nd Airlift Wing and 52nd Airlift Squadron members present. It was moved from its previous location as part of the wing’s expansion under the Total Force Initiative framework. The Airmen who perished in the crash are: Lt. Col. Robert Buckhout; Capt. Geoffrey Boyd; 1st Lt. Lance Dougherty; Chief Master Sgt. Jimmie Vail; Master Sgt. Jay Kemp; and Staff Sgt. Michael Scheideman. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Stephen J. Collier)
