4/26/2012 - PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- The U.S. Olympic Committee and the Department of Defense are bringing the Warrior Games to Colorado Springs April 30-May 5.

The Warrior Games is an Olympic-style event created in 2010 and open to all wounded, ill and injured military members and veterans. This year, more than 200 wounded, ill and injured service men, women and veterans are expected to compete in seven sports: archery, cycling, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track & field, and wheelchair basketball. Air Force teams will compete against teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard. In fact, an orthopedic surgeon who is part of the 21st Space Wing has been tapped to be the head coach for the U.S. Air Force 2012 Warrior Games team.

Maj. James Bales, 2010's Air Force Male Athlete of the Year and part of the 21st Force Support Squadron, will coach the 2012 team assisted by Cami Stock, from Colorado Springs, who is returning for her third year of Warrior Games.

Bales, the 2011 upright cycling coach and team physician, called it an honor to lead this year's team. "I have always had a huge respect for the sacrifices our wounded warriors have made," he said. "Being the head coach for Warrior Games combines my passion for sports, medicine and coaching."

Show your support for Air Force wounded warriors by attending the Warrior Games and thanking the participating athletes for their service and sacrifice. The events are free of charge and great for the entire family. Those attending are encouraged to wear their Air Force uniform or civilian attire with Air Force logos to show support of Air Force athletes.
